Detectives call off fresh search for missing man

By Cate McCurry

A fresh search linked to the disappearance of a man more than a decade ago has ended.

Gerard Conway was last seen in the Cookstown area at the end of January 2007.

Extensive inquiries by police over a number of years have failed to provide a breakthrough.

On Wednesday, detectives from the PSNI's serious crime branch searched an address at Battery Road near Ardboe. Nothing untoward was found.

Yesterday, officers launched a second search of land in the Clare Lane area of Cookstown.

Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Talbot, who is leading the investigation, said: "As part of the search operation we have deployed specialist resources including police search teams and victim recovery dogs.

"Gerard's family are being kept fully informed about today's enquiries."

Yesterday evening, the PSNI said: "The search operation in Cookstown by detectives investigating the 2007 disappearance of Gerard Conway have concluded. Nothing was found."

Mr Conway was 32 when he was reported missing on January 25 2007.

At the weekend it was reported that a woman had come forward with fresh information.
