Devotion of ‘black widow’ Hazel Stewart’s husband revealed in documentary
The relationship between double murderer Hazel Stewart and her ex-policeman husband David will come under the spotlight in a new documentary on Ulster’s notorious ‘black widow’ killer.
In the Channel 4 programme killer Hazel speaks from prison about her affair with dentist Colin Howell which led to the pair murdering their spouses.
Cameras follow Hazel’s second husband David on a visit to Hydebank Women’s Prison in south Belfast where she is serving a life sentence.
They record a telephone call she makes to him afterwards in which she tells him she loves him.
Despite her conviction, former policeman David and children Lisa and Andrew have vowed to stand by her, insisting she is innocent of murder.
In the programme he admits she committed serious offences by helping Colin Howell with the cover-up. He says that is where her involvement ends.
David tells the makers of The Perfect Murder that after the trial Hazel told him to file for divorce.
Filmed inside the family home they shared in Coleraine, he confesses: “When Hazel was arrested, certainly when she was convicted, she said to me ‘just divorce me and get on with your life’.
“But that’s not an option. That is not going to happen.”
He talks about how much he misses Hazel and how her daily phone calls and his weekly one-hour prison visit keep him going.
Hazel is said to call him as often as five times a day from a prison phone.
Hazel (48) was jailed for life in March, to serve a minimum 18 years, for the 1991 murders of her first husband Trevor Buchanan and her love rival Lesley Howell.
Howell, also serving life, told police that with Hazel’s help he gassed Lesley (31) and Trevor (32) and made their deaths look like suicide.
The Perfect Murder is on Channel 4 at 7.35pm this Friday
