Dissident mortars 'meant to kill police'

BY CHRIS KILPATRICK

Two deadly mortar launchers planted just outside a south Armagh village were intended to kill police officers, a local PSNI commander has said.

Bomb disposal experts spent a third day examining the devices yesterday in what police described as a "complex and protracted security operation".

The mortar bombs – which may have been intended to down helicopters carrying security personnel – were discovered on Tuesday just outside Cullyhanna.

Dissidents are believed to be behind the planned attack.

There was "no doubt" the lethal devices were designed to kill PSNI officers, with those who constructed and planted them described as "ruthless and mindless", said Newry and Mourne area commander, Chief Inspector Davy Beck.

The security operation in Cullyhanna finally came to an end late last night.
