Dissident republican paramilitaries are believed responsible for a so-called punishment shooting on a man in his 20s - the second in a week in Londonderry.
On Thursday evening two masked gunmen attacked the victim in Bracken Park in Galliagh and left him lying on waste ground with three bullet wounds in his leg.
He made his way alone to a nearby supermarket where an ambulance was called and he was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital.
This attack was a mirror image of one on a 29-year-old man in the Creggan the previous Thursday and brings the number of paramilitary shootings in Derry to its highest level in years.
Councillor Brian Tierney said: "I attended the scene and spoke to local people, who were disgusted at such a savage shooting.
"Aside from the sheer barbaric nature of the attack, it took place in full view of any children or young people in the area. Those behind it had absolutely no consideration for anyone else.
"My thoughts and prayers are with the young man and his family at this very difficult time."
