Dissidents 'will never derail City of Culture'

By Brendan McDaid

Any attempt by dissidents to wreck Londonderry's City of Culture celebrations will be fiercely resisted, it has been reiterated.

Church leaders and people across the city spoke with one voice as they condemned those behind the potentially catastrophic mortar attack.

There had been widespread fears that dissidents were planning to step up their activities in Derry during the city's year-long programme of events, festivals and high-profile concerts.

The PSNI has been working closely with civic leaders and senior cultural figures over the past 18 months to draw up contingency plans aimed at covering every eventuality.

Mary Hamilton, who was injured in the Claudy bombing which killed nine people in 1972, said that she knew all too well the devastation that could have been wrought by the bombs.

She said: "I saw what happened in Claudy and hearing that someone was going to do this brings it all back.

"These boys will not be allowed to stop people moving forward."
