Doctor badly hurt in Fermanagh ambulance crash

A doctor has been seriously injured after an ambulance overturned during a road crash.

The vehicle was transferring a seriously ill patient from the Erne Hospital in Co Fermanagh to the intensive care unit at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital when it collided with a lorry close to the village of Brookeborough at 3.30pm yesterday.

It is understood the patient, a woman in her 40s, was not injured as a result of the smash but was returned to the Erne for treatment and stabilisation.

The female doctor suffered serious injuries to her head, neck and chest. Four other people — two ambulance crew members and two nurses — were treated in hospital for minor injuries.

Last night an ambulance service spokesman said: “The situation is that the patient and the doctor who was accompanying her have been returned to the Erne Hospital for treatment for their injuries.”

Anyone who witnessed the accident has been asked to contact detectives on 0845 600 8000.
