Doctor in £94k deceit dies at 80
A GP given a suspended jail sentence for dishonestly obtaining almost £95,000 from the Department of Health in the 1990s has died.
Doctor Damien Beirne (80), from the Malone Road area of Belfast, died on September 29.
In 2004, Dr Beirne hit the headlines after he admitted dishonestly obtaining £94,291 by deception between July 1993 and June 1997 when he had worked as a GP at practices on the Falls Road and Whiterock Road in west Belfast.
The case came to light following a complaint from one of Dr Beirne's partners, Dr Ciaran Wasson.
Dr Beirne’s funeral Mass was due to take place at noon today at St Brigid’s Church, Belfast with interment to follow in Blaris Cemetery, Lisburn.
