North Belfast MP Nigel Dodds and his MEP wife Diane have both resigned their seats on Belfast City Council.
The move is in keeping with the DUP's policy to eventually end dual mandates. Mr Dodds, MP for north Belfast and also an MLA for the area, became the youngest ever Lord Mayor of Belfast in 1988, aged 29.
He was first elected to the council for the Castle ward three years earlier and served a further term as Lord Mayor in 1992.
His wife Diane, a former teacher, was elected to the council in 2005 representing the Court area of west Belfast. She was elected an MEP in June 2009. There is an understanding between the parties in Belfast that will allow two other DUP members to be co-opted to fill their council seats.
