DoE cancels firm's waste licence

A recycling company in Co Tyrone has had its waste management licence revoked after Department of the Environment (DoE) officials carried out searches of its premises.

Staff from the Environmental Crime Unit of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, part of the DoE, carried out searches of the site operated by Straduff Recycling Limited near Dromore.

DoE officials also searched another site in Co Fermanagh, which is operated by Enniskillen Scrap Metal Limited.

This searches came after the Enniskillen company had its exemption from waste management licensing lifted by the DoE earlier this year.

It is understood that the firm was operating without correct waste authorisation.

The moves come after a series of DoE investigations into unlawful waste activity, including the discovery of illegally buried waste in two sites in Co Derry and the closure of a major waste plant in the north west.
