An animal neglect investigation has been launched after a dog was found dead at a house in Co Antrim.

Police received a report of animal neglect at a property in the Killyglen Road area of Larne on Tuesday.

A number of items were seized including a BB gun and were taken away for examination.

A Mid and East Antrim Borough Council spokesman said they were investigating alleged offences under the Welfare of Animals Act (NI) 2011.

"As this investigation is ongoing, we are unable to comment further at this time.”

On Wednesday, police said a member of the public entered Coalisland Canal and rescued several kittens from a discarded bag.

An officer, positing on PSNI Dungannon and South Tyrone Facebook page, said: "We would always advise to be mindful of your own personal safety. Our brave rescuer took the saved kittens to be checked over by a vet.
