Drama recreates killer Hazel Stewart's court scenes

By Chris McCullough

This is the courtroom snap which provides the first glimpse of the new ITV drama telling how killers Colin Howell and Hazel Stewart were brought to justice.

It shows Genevieve O'Reilly, who plays murderess Stewart in the eagerly-awaited adaptation, sitting in the dock.

The photos taken at Laganside courthouse in Belfast have been released by director Nick Murphy.

The production called 'The Secret', which will be screened next May in three parts, also features James Nesbitt taking on the role of Howell.

The Secret tells the real life story of how Howell and Hazel, who then went under her married name of Buchanan, became embroiled in an affair and plotted to kill their spouses, Lesley Howell and Trevor Buchanan.

Scenes for the drama were also filmed in Carrickfergus, Groomsport and on Castlerock beach.

The bodies of mum-of-four Lesley and dad-of-two Trevor were found in a car filled with fumes in Castlerock in May 1991. Howell and Stewart conspired to make the deaths of the couple look like a suicide pact.

For almost 20 years they lied to their families, police and friends until Howell decided to confess all in 2009.

Stewart is serving 18 years in Hydebank for the murders while sex-addict dentist Howell is serving a minimum of 21 years for the double killings and a further five-and-a-half years for indecently assaulting a number of women while they were under sedation.
