A Garda armed support unit will be placed in Cavan on Monday following the abduction of Fermanagh businessman Kevin Lunney, the Garda chief has confirmed.

Commissioner Drew Harris made the announcement at a Policing Authority meeting yesterday.

He said the investigation into the abduction and torture of the Quinn Industrial Holdings executive is "ongoing and well resourced despite reports".

He added: "We have accelerated plans and armed support will be in Cavan from Monday. We've supplemented from the overall armed support unit so there's sufficient staff, but there will be a full time ASU in Cavan from Monday."
