Driver assaulted in hijacking by man armed with gun in Co Antrim

A van driver was left needing hospital treatment after he was assaulted by a gunman in a hijacking in Co Antrim.

It happened on Monday at around 10.15am in Carrickfergus.

The man, armed with a handgun, got into a white Mercedes Sprinter van on the Belfast Road and threatened the driver.

He was ordered to drive to the Glencairn Road in north Belfast where the contents of his van were transferred to a waiting white Transit van which then made off from the scene.

The driver was assaulted and taken to hospital for treatment.

His van was also destroyed in a fire.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incidents in Carrickfergus or Belfast, or anyone with any information, to contact detectives in Larne on 101.
