Driver attacked during car hijacking near north Belfast

A motorist has had his car stolen after he stopped to help a man staggering in the road near Belfast.

The victim, aged in his 40s, was driving his Ford Focus along the Hightown Road in Glengormley during the early hours of this morning.

Shortly before 1am he stopped after seeing a young man who appeared to be staggering about the road.

When he got out of his car the young male kicked him and hit him on the arm with a bottle.

Three further men then appeared and they all made off in the car.

The driver was not seriously injured in the assault and the car was found burnt out a short time later in a car park on the Park Road in Mallusk.

One of the males is described as being approximately 18-22 years old, wearing a light blue t-shirt, track bottoms and a dark blue baseball cap.

Appealing for information Newtownabbey police officer Sergeant Ash, said: "Police would ask anyone who may have witnessed the incident or anyone with any information to contact them at Newtownabbey Police Station on the non emergency number 101."
