Driver cut free after car plunges off promenade

By Claire Williamson

A man has been cut free from his car after it went over the wall of the Portstewart promenade in Co Londonderry.

It happened yesterday morning in the Crescent area of the seaside town just before 10.30am.

Locals reported hearing a loud bang as the incident happened.

A Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said firefighters using cutting equipment quickly freed the man from the car.

John Bradley, the owner of nearby store Sheila's Portstewart, said there were no railings at that particular stretch of road and that it had happened before.

He said: "The car has been removed.

"My brother-in law was nearby and he just heard a big bang."

In 2013 a couple in their late 80s had a miraculous escape after their car shot off the edge of the promenade and crashed onto rocks 20ft below.
