Driver 'injured police in car pursuit'

By Alan Erwin

Four police officers were injured in collisions with an alleged drink-driver being pursued through west Belfast, a court heard.

Francis Martin Kennedy is accused of being behind the wheel of a car that crashed into their vehicles on Tuesday.

The 39-year-old, of Stewartstown Road in Dunmurry, appeared before Belfast Magistrates' Court yesterday charged with 11 motoring offences.

Police said they began to pursue a Honda Accord after it jumped a red light on Albert Street. The car stopped on the Falls Road, but then sped up and struck a PSNI vehicle, injuring two officers.

A judge was told the Honda then travelled at speed along Leeson Street and on into Odessa Street.

It hit a parked van and crashed into a second police car, causing injuries to a further two officers.

The driver then tried to flee the scene, it is alleged.

Refusing bail, District Judge Meehan said of the alleged offences: "It's an egregious and reckless state of driving, compounded with drink."
