Driver is injured as gang attempt to hijack his car in Ulsterville Gardens

A man has been treated for head injuries after a car hijacking and robbery attempt in south Belfast.

Detectives are investigating the incident which happened in the Ulsterville Gardens area near the Lisburn Road just after 7pm on Saturday.

Police said three males approached a man who was getting into a car and demanded his car keys and money.

An altercation ensued and the three culprits made off empty handed in the direction of Fane Street. As a result the victim sustained head and facial injuries.

A short time later police arrested three males aged 25, 22 and 20 years in the Donegal Avenue area on suspicion of attempted hijacking, attempted robbery and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The 22-year-man arrested has been taken to hospital for treatment for injuries he sustained during the initial incident.

Detective Chief Inspector Gary Reid said: "I appeal to anyone who has information relating to this incident, or witnessed the incident to contact detectives at Musgrave on the non-emergency number 101 or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
