A van driver has had a lucky escape after crashing into the River Lagan.

The vehicle ploughed through a metal crash barrier into the water at the Ormeau Embankment yesterday afternoon.

It is understood the man managed to get out through a window of the vehicle and swim to the riverbank. No one else was in the van.

The Ambulance Service received a call to the crash shortly after 3pm and were on the scene six minutes later.

Police and fire service personnel also attended.

John McPoland, from the Ambulance Service, said the driver declined to go to hospital. "He was just shaken," said Mr McPoland. "A bit wet and cold."

Police said they had no details as to how the vehicle would be removed. An investigation will now take place into how the accident happened.
