Drug addict is sent to jail for breaching court order

By John Cassidy

A drug addict has been jailed for eight months after a street fight during which his brother bit off part of a man's ear.

Alcoholic Thomas Dreelan (22), of Ballynure Street, north Belfast, pleaded guilty last September at Belfast Crown Court to three counts of common assault and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The offences took place on June 2, 2012, following a house party on the Cliftonville Road.

The court heard that during a drunken street fight, the defendant's brother Sean Dreelan (25) bit part of a man's ear off. He was subsequently jailed for six years for the offence.

Another man was knocked unconscious by Thomas Dreelan, who was ordered to complete 100 hours of community service and a two-year probation order.

However, Belfast Crown Court heard that since the sentence was handed down Thomas Dreelan had completed less than half of that community service order and had threatened Probation Service while under the influence of drugs and refused to engage with them.

Jailing Dreelan, Judge Gordon Kerr QC said there was no hope of him finishing his community service or probation sentences.
