Drug gang blamed for gun blast attack in Co Armagh

By Lesley Houston

This photograph shows just how close a young family came to serious harm after a gunman fired at the door of their Co Armagh home.

A man was in his Ardboe Drive property in Lurgan with his wife and their seven-year-old son when a shotgun was fired at the front door on Sunday night.

The PUP has blamed drug dealers with republican links for the attack.

PUP Assembly candidate Sophie Long said the man had taken his young son into another room just moments before the attacker opened fire.

The child's bicycle can be seen not far from the door in the photograph.

It is understood the man is a member of the loyalist party and that this is the third time in recent months the home has been targeted.

In December the door was set alight with flammable liquid, and the man's car tyres were later slashed.

The family were described as "well-known and respected" in the area and although they escaped uninjured, they were left shaken by their ordeal.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which was reported to them at around 7.30pm.

Witnesses told police that a male, dressed in dark clothing, fled the scene on a bicycle in the direction of Trasna Way.

The Lord Mayor of Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon District Council yesterday condemned the gun attack.

Darryn Causby said: "This appalling attack could have had lethal consequences on this young family.

"Everyone should feel safe and secure in their own home, not terrorised by criminals."
