Drugs worth an estimated £25,000 were seized after a man spotted acting suspiciously dropped a sports bag when approached by police in east Belfast.

Police recovered the bag and - after a brief chase on foot and some help from a passer-by - found the man hiding behind a hedge at a nearby property.

A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drugs offences.

The incident happened in the Castlereagh Road area at around 5.30pm on Sunday as patrolling officers were chatting to a member of the public.

"As they spoke, they noticed a man acting suspiciously nearby," a PSNI spokesman said.

"As they approached the man, he dropped a sports bag he had been carrying and made off from police.

"On inspection, a quantity of suspected class A and B drugs including herbal cannabis, with an estimated street value of around £25,000 were found inside the sports bag and seized.

"In a follow-up search of a nearby property, smaller amounts of suspected drugs and drugs paraphernalia were recovered.

"The man was arrested on suspicion of possession of Class A and B drugs and possession of Class A and B drugs with intent to supply. He has been released on police bail pending further enquiries."
