Drugs suspect to stay in custody

One of two men in custody charged in connection with the discovery of £150,000 worth of speed and cannabis in Londonderry has failed in a bid to get bail.

Paul Rodgers (50), a father-of-two from Stoneypath near Newbuildings, has been in custody since the drugs were found in a house at Moore Street in the Waterside on February 27.

At the city's Magistrates Court yesterday his solicitor applied to have Rodgers released on bail. However, District Judge Barney McElholm refused the application saying he did not believe a sufficient change of circumstances existed for the application to be granted.

The defendant was remanded in continuing custody until May 1 when he will appear in court for a video-link hearing alongside his co-accused.
