Drunk Derry teen hit by bus and didn't realise it, court hears

By Eamonn MacDermott

A Derry youth was so drunk he was hit by a bus and did not realise it, the local Magistrates' Court heard on Wednesday.

The 17-year-old appeared "in considerable pain" according to his solicitor Mr Paddy MacDermott.

He was arrested for breaching his bail conditions that he observe a curfew and abstain from alcohol.

A police officer told the court that the youth was arrested in Foyle Street and found to be in breach by having taken alcohol.

Mr MacDermott said he was "apparently that drunk he had been hit by a bus in Foyle Street and was unaware of it".

He said his client realised he had put his liberty in jeopardy.

District Judge Barney McElholm said he was giving the youth his final warning and added that he was "obviously a danger to himself" if he could get hit by a bus and not know it.

He told the youth if he came back to court he was going into custody.

The youth will appear again on October 3.
