Drunk driver jailed over accident
A driver who was almost four times the legal drink drive limit when he ploughed into a road worker wept in court as he was jailed for four-and-a-half years.
Jailing 26-year-old Adam Stewart at Belfast Crown Court, Judge Tom Burgess said the case “demonstrates all too vividly what can be caused by what, at the end of the day, is a lethal weapon”.
Earlier he had heard that Stewart, from the Upper Newtownards Road in east Belfast, had ploughed into 28-year-old Conor McRuairi while driving to a nearby garage for food after previously being on a 12-hour drinking session.
The court heard Mr McRuairi suffered a broken left arm and right leg, injuries to his left foot and both knees, has reduced sensation in his mouth and nose and has undergone four operations so far and more may yet follow.
