Drunk teen who spat at officer jailed

A man has been jailed after he admitted spitting at a police officer.

Roy Cunningham (19) of Centenary House, Victoria Street in Belfast, admitted being disorderly and assaulting police on August 23.

The court was told that police were on patrol in the Racecourse Road area of Londonderry and saw a heavily intoxicated man leaning against a wall.

He appeared to be agitated and when police approached he told them: "F***off scumbags."

He was asked to refrain from that type of behaviour. He refused and then spat at an officer, hitting him on the leg.

Defence counsel Eoghain Devlin said his client had problems with drink and when he was intoxicated that was when he offended.

Cunningham was given a three-month prison sentence.
