Drunken thug Stephen Hunter sent to prison for headbutt on paramedic

By Nevin Farrell

A man who headbutted a paramedic trying to help him has been jailed for three months.

Stephen Arthur Hunter (27), from Orby Drive in Liscolman, was sentenced at Coleraine Magistrates Court yesterday.

The court heard a police patrol encountered Hunter in Bridge Street, Coleraine, on October 13 last year.

A prosecutor said the defendant's hands had blood on them and he had suffered a wound to the head. When officers tried to aid him he became hostile and showed further aggression when an ambulance arrived.

A prosecutor said Hunter lunged at the paramedic and headbutted him on the right side of the jaw. The victim was forced to take time off work because of his injuries, the court heard.

A defence lawyer said Hunter had been drinking heavily that day and had no recollection of the incident.

District Judge Liam McNally said: "It's quite clear from indications I've previously made that people who attack ambulance workers must expect custodial sentences."
