DUP MLA takes on I'm a Celebrity bush tucker trial at Christmas lights switch-on

A Northern Ireland Christmas lights switch-on became a bush tucker trial for one DUP MLA.

The Donaghcloney Christmas Lights switch-on featured a head-to-head style challenge just like in the popular ITV programme I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here.

DUP MLA Carla Lockhart and Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Lord Mayor Gareth Wilson took on the challenge with principal of Donaghcloney Primary School Miss Nesbitt and Vice Principal Mrs Hamill.

In an eating challenge similar to that of the programme hosted by Ant and Dec the politicians and teachers ate a series of bugs including meal worms and crickets.

The compere for the event was local councillor Mark Baxter who provided encouragement for those taking part.

Children and parents who had turned out to watch the lights switch-on cheered them on as they squirmed while eating the bugs.

On a post on her Facebook page the DUP's Carla Lockhart said it was a "night to remember".

She said: "That moment when you have bitten off more than you can chew quite literally happened tonight! I actually ate bugs !!

"So the task was eating actual bugs but we conquered it. I downed the lot! Grant it I am still retching!"
