DUP MP rounds on 'Twitter trolls' over father's gunrunning past
DUP MP Emma Little Pengelly hit out at "Twitter trolls" who accused her of hypocrisy over her stance on terrorism given her father's conviction for gunrunning.
The Twittersphere was quick to pounce on a quote from the South Belfast MP's speech from the DUP conference on Saturday.
"Through the worst of the violence, it was the DUP who stood firm against terrorism and we always will. Terrorism was always wrong. It was never justified,” she said.
Mrs Little Pengelly's father was convicted of gunrunning for loyalist paramilitaries. She faced a barrage of tweet with some asking if she had forgotten about the conviction.
She responded: "The Twitter trolls are out force tonight, taking the "yer da" to new level. I have been utterly consistent in my condemnation of terrorism. I engage with all (inc SF & across) & always on basis all know my position on terrorism. Sad. We don't inherit decisions or blame of others."
The former barrister referenced an article she wrote for the Belfast Telegraph about how her father's conviction affected her life and why she wouldn't be disowning him.
She added: "Supporting people to transition in the context of "all terrorism is wrong" is both necessary and the accepted approach in NI for decades."
