DUP select Wilson replacement

By Brénna Walsh

The news that Sammy Wilson is to stand down from his Belfast City Council Pottinger ward seat after 29 years has opened the way for three DUP candidates.

The East Belfast DUP Association will hold a meeting to fill the vacancy next Friday, February 26, to select one of three candidates: Gavin Robinson, Adam Newton or Stephen Crosby.

Gavin Robinson has lived in east Belfast all his life and is a Barrister at Law. He has been a member of the DUP for six years. He worked as a political researcher for Lord Browne in the House of Lords and the Northern Ireland Assembly

Adam Newton gained a politics degree from Northumbria University and a Masters degree in International Studies at Newcastle University and is a political and community researcher for Robin Newton MLA.

Stephen Crosby is a father of two daughters. He has achieved a M.Sc and M.Phil in Manufacturing Engineering and will graduate with a Bachelor of Theology in June. His employment experience includes 18 years at Bombardier-Belfast, eight years in England and the USA, and three years as a Researcher (QUB).

Mr Wilson said he decided to step aside to concentrate on the forthcoming general election. His resignation will take effect on March 1.
