Earhart gear may return to Derry

By Donna Deeney

Representatives of the Culture Company 2013 have been invited to apply to the renowned Smithsonian Institute in Washington for artefacts belonging to Amelia Earhart to come to Londonderry on loan during 2013.

Earhart's association with the city came about accidently when, on the first transatlantic solo flight by a female pilot, she set off from Newfoundland en route to Paris but touched down in a field in Culmore instead.

The invite came after Chief Executive of the Culture Company, Shona McCarty, visited the museum's display of Earhart aviation artefacts, including her little red plane which she christened ‘Bessie', during a promotional visit to Canada and the USA to encourage tourists to come to Derry next year for the City of Culture celebrations.

She said: “We have been talking to them about their incredible artefacts, not just the plane but also her flak jacket and goggles and about borrowing artefacts for 2013. They have asked us to put the suggestion to them in a solid proposal which we will do when we come back.”
