East Belfast house breaker was armed with a sledgehammer

A burglar was armed with a sledgehammer as he tried to rob a house in east Belfast, police have said.

The incident took place at a house in the Dunraven Crescent area of east Belfast in the early hours of Saturday morning.

At approximately 2.30am, two men entered a house which was empty at the time. One of the men was armed with a sledgehammer.

A PSNI spokesperson said it is not thought that the men left with any items of significant damage, however they did smash the window of a car that had been parked in the driveway.

One of the men is described as being about 5ft9ins tall, of slim build and was wearing a balaclava and a green coat with a fur hood.

Detective Constable Campbell said: “I would ask anyone who knows anything about this incident to contact detectives at Musgrave Police Station on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 302 of 29/01/17."
