An elderly couple have had to move out of their home after a vicious attack that has left them shaken and upset.

Gwen and John Stewart — both in their 70s — were in their Castledawson bungalow on Friday when thugs threw a boulder through their front room window, smashing the glass and damaging the interior.

The attack was condemned by Lord McCrea, a former DUP MP, who lives in the area.

He said that the police are treating it as a sectarian incident.

“It’s absolutely despicable.

“This happened in broad daylight. The CCTV had been broken, so they knew what they were doing.

“This elderly couple were forced out of Bellaghy, as were other Protestant families.

“They’ve never had any trouble since they’ve moved to Castledawson.

“These are innocent elderly folk, and this attack has put them back to what they went through 20 years ago, when they had constant bombardment from republicans in Bellaghy.

“It’s blatant sectarianism to do this to an elderly couple.”
