By Amanda Poole

A man in his 90s has died following a one-vehicle crash in north Belfast.

The accident happened at around 12.35pm yesterday on Mountcollyer Avenue.

The victim was the driver of the car. His name has not been released.

North Belfast Alliance councillor John Blair expressed his sympathy.

“This is desperately sad news. I would like to offer my condolences to the family and friends of this man,” he said.

“We must do more to improve road safety to prevent any more lives being lost in the future. One life lost on the road will always be one too many.”

So far this year a total of 25 people have lost their lives on the roads in Northern Ireland.

Fourteen deaths have been in rural areas and 11 have been in urban areas.

PSNI statistics revealed a total of 59 people died in road collisions in 2011, up from 55 in 2010.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed yesterday’s incident to contact them at York Road on 0845 600 8000.
