Elderly woman dies after being knocked down by lorry in Co Derry

An 81-year-old woman has died after she was struck by a lorry in Co Londonderry.

It happened shortly after noon at Broad Street in the centre of Magherafelt.

The victim has been named as Rhoda Kearney.

She was killed after being struck by a Volvo articulated lorry shortly after 12.10pm.

The town centre has been closed off.

SDLP councillor Christine McFlynn expressed her condolences.

"This is heartbreaking news that has saddened and stunned the local community," she said.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the victim's family and friends at this devastating time."

PSNI inspector Alan Hutton said:

"Police can confirm that the woman who died following a road traffic incident in Magherafelt earlier this afternoon was 81-year-old Rhoda Kearney from the Magherafelt area.

"Rhoda died at the scene after being struck by a lorry on Broad Street earlier this afternoon.

"Shortly after 12:10pm, it was reported a Volvo articulated lorry was involved in the incident. The Broad Street, Magherafelt remains closed in both directions and motorists are advised to seek alternative main routes for their journey."

Police have appealed for anyone who was travelling in the area at the time to contact them on 101.
