Electronically tagged men dubbed 'dim and dimmer' after robbing petrol station

Steve Smith, 22 and Mark Villa, 18 both from Londonderry were dubbed ‘dim and dimmer’ by their defence solicitor at a court hearing in Donegal where those in attendance heard how the men robbed €320 (£262) and £350 from a petrol station in Muff.

Both defendants were on bail from Derry Court and wearing electronic tagging devices when they threatened staff at the forecourt before running off with the money.

The pair were caught and arrested by Gardai.Mr Smith and Mr Villa’s solicitor, Ciaran McLochliann told the court that his clients were high on ‘blues’ (diazepam) at the time of the incident and went on to say: “You’ve heard of Dumb and Dumber, well these two are Dim and Dimmer. There was no fore planning here, it was just a mad moment on their behalf and now they are genuinely remorseful and want to plead at the earliest date.”

Judge Paul Kelly at Carndonagh District Court sentenced Mr Smith to six months imprisonment and Mr Villa to six month’s detention.
