By Adrian Rutherford

A young man who died in a motorcycle accident near Coalisland at the weekend was one of the most genuine and funny people you could meet, a friend has stated.

Colum Canavan died on Sunday from injuries sustained in an accident on the Annagher Road.

The 26-year-old, who was from Mountjoy Road, was riding a Honda motorcycle which collided with an Audi A4 car at around 3pm on Saturday.

SDLP representative Malachy Quinn, who knew Mr Canavan for many years, said he was shocked by his death.

"I am deeply saddened by the enormous tragedy this weekend for the Canavan family," he said.

"I have known Colum for years and my heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family and his girlfriend Marie at this heartbreaking time.

"Colum was one of the most genuine and funny people you could have had the pleasure to meet.

"He brightened up any room he walked into and never failed to have all of us laughing when in his company."

Mr Quinn said the tragedy had shocked the Coalisland area.

"He was a great friend to many and his loss will be felt and mourned by many people in the parish and beyond," he added.

Mr Canavan is survived by his parents Paul and Geraldine, and siblings John, Bronagh and Eamonn.
