Ex-addict jailed over pipe-bomb stockpile
A former drug-addicted burglar caught with a pub safe — and who later caused a security alert after police found pipe-bombs under his bed — has been jailed for five years.
The Crown Court heard that William Mason (22) was initially arrested carrying a safe from a Carrickfergus bar in Co Antrim.
In a follow-up search of his mother's Carmeen Drive home in Newtownabbey on November 25, 2008, police uncovered five pipe- bombs and 216 rounds of assorted ammunition.
Prosecution lawyer Gary McCrudden said as a result of the explosives find, up to 30 homes in the area had to be evacuated while Army Technical Officers made the devices safe.
Defence QC James Gallagher said at the time Mason had a drugs problem and also owed “some sort of organisation or group £500 and could not pay it”.
The sentence was split between two-and-a-half years in custody and the same on licence.
