Ex-DUP 'whistleblower' back in Lagan Valley role

By Rebecca Black

A decision to remove ex-DUP whistleblower Jenny Palmer from a key council committee has been overturned.

Following what has been described as a heated meeting of Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council, Ms Palmer was reinstated onto the board of the Lagan Valley Regional Park. She is currently chair of the body, but last month the DUP proposed that SDLP councillor Pat Catney be the final nominee from the council on it.

Ms Palmer attempted to challenge the decision during the July meeting of the council but was unsuccessful. The decision was only overturned after the Ulster Unionist Party, Alliance, TUV and NI21 brought forward a call in motion. In July 2013, Ms Palmer said that she had been ordered by a DUP special adviser, Stephen Brimstone, to change the way she intended to vote at a Housing Executive board meeting called to terminate a contract with the maintenance firm, Red Sky. She subsequently left the party.
