A former international first class cricketer has been fined £150 and handed a three month driving ban for two speeding offences.

Rodney Ontong (62), from Thorndale Avenue in Belfast, did not appear at Newtownards Magistrates' Court.

However, defence barrister Conor Holmes said Ontong was pleading guilty to two offences of speeding on May 31 and June 21 last year.

A prosecuting lawyer told the court that in light of the guilty pleas, he would withdraw two further offences accusing Ontong of failing to provide information on who was driving.

He said a speed camera on the Antrim Road caught Ontong driving a Skoda at 38mph and 40mph on separate occasions in the 30mph zone.

South African Ontong played for his country and captained Glamorgan County Cricket Club in the 1970s and 80s. He retired as a result of injuries suffered in a car accident in 1988.
