Extra warning signs for A4 near Dungannon

By Patrice Dougan

More warning signs are to be displayed on a dual carriageway notorious for drivers heading the wrong way - just months after extra signs were installed.

Further safety measures will now be put in place on the A4 near Dungannon following reports of 26 vehicles travelling in the wrong direction since it opened in November 2010.

The road between the M1 motorway and Ballygawley has been plagued by drivers speeding towards oncoming traffic.

Roads Service announced new measures yesterday including additional signs, white lines and coning in order to help reduce the number of incidents.

Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy said the incidents "could have grave consequences".

"It is absolutely essential drivers pay attention to the road signage at junctions when joining the new A4 dual carriageway," he said.

"Drivers must not rely on previous journey habits nor on sat-nav's that have not been updated to reflect the new road layout."
