Fall star Seainin to wed after surprise proposal in Italian Alps

By Maureen Coleman

Belfast actress Seainin Brennan, who stars in BBC2 hit drama The Fall, is to wed her long-term boyfriend later this year after he popped the question on a skiing trip to Italy.

Seainin and her partner of three years, banker Ben Fetherston, were enjoying a romantic holiday in the charming Alpine resort of Courmayeur when he proposed.

The couple had fallen in love with the town, located on the Italian side of Mont Blanc, after visiting it last year. Ben, who works for Citibank in Prime Brokerage, suggested returning to the resort this year, having decided it was the ideal place for the proposal.

Seainin, who plays Liz Tyler, the abused wife of paramilitary thug Jimmy Tyler in The Fall, said 'yes' straight away. The couple plan to tie the knot this autumn, with an intimate wedding surrounded by close friends and family.

The 36-year-old actress, who was the winner of the Belfast Telegraph Woman of the Year Arts category in 2011, said she had no idea Ben was going to ask her to marry him but that he couldn't have picked a better place to do it.

"Ben and I went to Courmayeur last February and absolutely loved it," she said. "It's a 17th century spa town, with cobbled streets and stunning scenery and we had such a lovely time there.

"Ben suggested going back this year but I didn't know he had already spoken to my parents and told them he was going to propose. He actually got down on two knees when he asked me! It was a lovely, private moment, no grand gestures, no flashing lights, just a romantic moment in our hotel and I said 'yes' instinctively.

"The ring is gorgeous. It's timeless and simple, a round solitaire in a platinum setting and he picked it himself. It's perfect.

"I can't wait to get married to Ben now and we're hoping to do it in September this year. We're considering getting married at home and abroad, we just haven't decided yet, but I'm looking forward to checking out venues.

"We're both really excited."

Seainin met Ben three and a half years ago in a Belfast nightclub and were friends to begin with for about six months, before they started dating.

She said: "He really makes me laugh - we have so much fun together. I smile all the time when I'm with him. He's smart, hard working, sporty, so generous and caring and he makes me feel special every day. He's my best friend."

Ben added: "I'm so happy Seainin said yes. I can't wait to marry her. She's the smartest, cutest girl I've ever met."

Seainin, who is starring in a new short film with John Hannah called Girona, played a central role in series one and two of The Fall. In the finale of season two, her character was tracked down to a shelter for abused women by her on-screen husband Jimmy Tyler (Brian Milligan). After forcibly trying to remove her from the refuge, he then went after her grief counsellor Paul Spector, played by Jamie Dornan, believing he had had an affair with his wife.

The finale ended explosively with three characters, Tyler, Spector and Tom Anderson (Colin Morgan) all down in a shoot-out, paving the way for series three.

Seainin Brennan is a Belfast-born actress who has starred in many stage productions, television shows and films. A fluent Spanish speaker with a Master's degree in European Political Administration, she trained at the Guildford School of Acting and the Irish Film Actors' Studio. Her credits includes Ibsen's Ghost at Bristol Old Vic, TV show Hidden with Philip Glenister, Irish film Dare to be Wild and her best known role, as Liz Tyler in BBC1 drama The Fall.
