Family bids farewell at funeral for beach tragedy girl Bethany Cousins

The funeral took place yesterday of tragic 11-year-old drowning victim Bethany Cousins.

The funeral was held at Shankill Parish in Lurgan.

Her mother Ruth said Bethany was everything she could have wanted.

“If you could write down 100 things you want in a daughter — that was her,” she told the Lurgan Mail.

“I would have described her as a quiet child, but when you hear some of the stories from her friends she was anything but.”

Bethany, from Lurgan, died after getting into difficulty in a dangerous stretch of water while bodyboarding near Portballintrae on the north Antrim coast on Sunday.

Her firefighter father Alistair tried in vain to rescue her from Bushfoot Strand, but he, too, struggled with strong undercurrents.

The youngster was pulled from the water by the Coastguard but despite attempts to resuscitate her she died in nearby Coleraine Hospital several hours later.

Bethany, a pupil at King’s Park Primary School, was laid to rest in her hometown of Lurgan yesterday afternoon.
