Police are investigating after a family were held hostage by a gang in their Belfast home

A family have been held hostage by a gang who broke into their south Belfast home, police have said.

They were awoken in their house in Rathdrum Street by three masked intruders and threatened with sticks and iron bars.

The gang then attacked the 46-year-old father, who was later treated for a suspected broken jaw.

They held the husband, his wife and three children for two hours before leaving with jewellery and money.

Democratic Unionist Assembly member Jimmy Spratt said: "No-one can imagine the horror this family has been through.

"My thoughts and prayers are with all of the family and I hope the gentleman who has been injured makes a speedy recovery. However, the emotional trauma will take much longer to recover from."
