Father and son assaulted after aggravated burglary in Co Down

A father and son have been assaulted by three masked men carrying a hammer who entered a house demanding money in Co Down.

Police received reports of the incident at a house on the Castlewellan Road in Ballyward sometime between 11.40pm Thursday and 12.10am on Friday morning.

Two male occupants were assaulted and received injures which are not deemed to be life threatening. The female occupant has been left in shock.

The three males made off from the area with a sum of money.

Detective Sergeant Stewart is appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone with any information that can assist with the investigation to contact detectives in Ardmore Police Station on 101 quoting reference 1526 of 22/02/18.

Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.

Sinn Fein MP Chris Hazzard has called for information to be brought forward to the police.

The south Down MP said: "Last night three armed men carried out an appalling attack on a home in Ballyward in which hammers were used to assault members of a local family.

"This is a vicious crime that has shocked the wider community.

"I am calling on anyone who may have any information about this armed robbery to come forward to the PSNI and help bring these vicious criminals responsible to justice."
