Father held on threat to kill partner day after jail release

By George Jackson

A father-of-five who was released from prison on Tuesday after serving a sentence for assaulting his partner has been charged with threatening to kill her the next day.

Kevin McCallion (41), from Glendale Drive, was arrested on Wednesday night outside his partner's home at Rathlin Drive in the Creggan area of Londonderry following a 999 call to the police from one of their children.

When he was released from jail on Tuesday the court imposed a five-year restraining order on McCallion.

A police officer told Deputy District Judge John Connolly that there was a considerable history of domestic violence involving the defendant and his partner.

She told Londonderry Magistrates Court that police received a call from one of the defendant's children who was in a distressed state. When they arrived at the scene the defendant's partner told officers she was in fear of him.

The defendant, who is charged with threatening to kill his partner, breaching a court restraining order by making threatening phone calls to her and with breaching a non-molestation order, was refused bail.

McCallion was remanded in custody until November 28.
