Fiancee of tragic racer flies home for funeral

By Claire Weir

The devastated fiancee of motorcyclist Adrian McFarland flew back to Northern Ireland from the Czech Republic last night to start helping his family make preparations for his funeral.

Mr McFarland (41) from Co Tyrone died after he crashed during a race near the town of Hradec Kralove on Saturday.

It is understood that his body will be brought back to Northern Ireland before the end of the week and funeral details will be announced later.

Mr McFarland, who lived in the Ballymullarty Road area of Newtownstewart, is survived by parents Robert and Olive, fiancee Avril and children Lyndsay and Tony. He had worked at the Terex plant in Co Tyrone.

In another tragic twist, it has emerged that Mr McFarland had been riding a Trevor Lindsay Suzuki 1000 Superstock bike this season for Team Blue, set up in memory of his friend, Ballymoney man Victor Gilmore, who died at the Killalane races outside Dublin last September.

Gilmore had ridden the same Lindsay Superstock motorcycle in 2010 before his death.

Colin McWhirter, chairman of Dungannon Motorcycle Club, who knew Gilmore, McFarland and 20-year-old Wayne Hamilton, who died on the Isle of Man on Monday, said that his friend would not have wanted road racing to stop.

"It's only a year since Victor died but we will all be out at Killalane next week."
