By Amanda Ferguson

Fifty firefighters are tackling a blaze at the RecyCo waste processing plant in Omagh.

The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) was made aware of the fire at the recycling company on the Barony Road in Mountfield during the early hours of this morning.

A NIFRS spokesman said the public is asked to avoid the area for the meantime.

“NIFRS crews have been working since the early hours to contain a fire at an industrial recycling plant on Barony Road, Mountfield, Omagh," he said.

"Over 50 firefighters and officers are currently on scene with local stations being assisted by crews from Armagh and Portadown who are providing specialist appliances including a water tanker, aerial appliance and high volume pump to assist in operations.

"Crews were first alerted at 04.15am this morning and firefighting operations are still ongoing.

"NIFRS crews are working closely with the site management to minimise risk to people and the environment and it is anticipated that the incident will continue for some time.

"NIFRS would like to take this opportunity to advise members of the public to avoid the area around Barony Road in order to minimise congestion and allow on-coming emergency vehicles unhindered access”
