Fine for abusing Altnagelvin Hospital staff

A brother of a murder victim was given a deferred sentence at Londonderry Magistrates Court when he admitted his sixth offence of disorderly behaviour at Altnagelvin Hospital's accident and emergency department.

Daniel McCrory (26) from Cornshell Fields, was so abusive to the nursing and medical staff that on one occasion they refused to treat him.

His brother Barry McCrory was shot dead in his girlfriend's Shipquay Street flat in the centre of Londonderry last October.

District Judge Barney McElholm said McCrory was rushed to the hospital after he was found near his home with self-inflicted cuts to his wrists last August 6.

He was so abusive to the ambulance crew when they tried to treat him that the police had to be called to the scene.

Inside the hospital McCrory continued with his aggressive and abusive behaviour towards the medical staff and ignored several police requests to calm down.

Defence solicitor Michael McGee said: "The murder of Mr McCrory's brother last October had a traumatic effect on him."

Mr McElholm deferred sentencing until July 4 and ordered McCrory to pay £250 to the Friends of Altnagelvin Hospital.
