Fifty firefighters have prevented a major fire at a bingo hall in Larne spreading to nearby shops.
Additional fire crews called out to Laharna Retail Park at Circular Road in the early hours of yesterday brought the fire under control in around three hours.
A member of the public alerted the Fire Service shortly before 4am. Eight pumping appliances and a fire command unit were involved.
Assistant group commander John Bacon said that despite the bingo hall's first floor extending over the adjacent B&M Bargains store, it was unlikely their stock had been damaged.
"There is substantial damage to the back of the premises," he said of the bingo hall. "The fire destroyed an emergency exit on the first floor.
"The first crews from Larne did an absolutely splendid job. They reduced the likelihood of spreading.
"The incident had to be resourced quite extensively in order to stop the fire from spreading to the other retail units in the block."
He added: "It's down to the quick actions of the two Larne appliances initially in attendance that we were able to bring it under control."
