Firearms accused's bid for bail is refused

A man was remanded in custody charged with having firearms and ammunition in connection with ongoing public disorder.

Philip Charles Lavery (43) was arrested during searches in the area of his home at Kings Way, Newtownabbey, Co Antrim.

Detectives from the Operation Dulcet inquiry team carried out the trawl on Thursday as part of investigations into incidents surrounding the loyalist flag protests.

Lavery appeared before Belfast Magistrates Court on four charges. He is accused of two counts of possessing a firearm in suspicious circumstances, having ammunition in suspicious circumstances, and dishonestly using electricity.

A bail application was refused due to concerns of potential interference with witnesses.

Lavery was remanded in custody to appear again by video-link on March 1.

Meanwhile a man (24) and a woman (45), arrested during the same search, were released on bail pending further inquiries.
